HOW TO BUY

When you are buying a gaming laptop you shouldn’t decide just by looking at the specifications. The laptop as a whole should be analysed. Ranging from the backlit keyboard to the chipset in the motherboard, everything is on a must know basis when buying a gaming laptop. Here I have explained some of the basic steps you must follow so that you can find your ideal laptop and don’t end up making the wrong choice.

  • Make sure that you get the latest processor: There are two companies which dominate the CPU market – Intel and AMD. Generally, Intel chipsets are better than the AMD chipsets as Intel processors tend to perform better per core while the AMD CPUs compensates that performance with multiple cores. Intel processors perform better but are expensive while AMD processors are cheap but single threaded performance is less that Intel. Processors can be responsible for either higher frame rates or lower frame rates in games so the choice of processor has to be good. The Intel i7 and i5 processors of the 9th gen are the latest Intel processors available while AMD has Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 5 chips available for gaming laptops so make sure you do not compromise on them by buying a laptop with CPU of lower generation.
  • Watch out for the GPU: Choosing a GPU can be a hassle because there is no designated paradigm for choosing a GPU. There are many GPUs available in the market. The main companies dominating the GPU market are NVIDIA and AMD. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX and GTX cards are considered as true gaming graphics cards so don’t buy anything less. The most basic gaming processor available in the market is the GTX 1050. It is a decent card but is too old now to support the new generation games. Instead go for GTX 1650 or 1660ti which lie in the same price range but are newer than 1050. Here also AMD provides a cheaper option with very little performance decrease compared to NVIDIA in the same range. AMD Radeon RX590 is the processor that provides equivalent performance to GTX 1660ti at a cheaper price so you can choose either of them. Some laptops are even providing the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 in affordable price ranges.
  • Get more RAM: Random Access Memory or RAM is one of the most important things to play a game. The frame rate you get in a game is directly proportional to the amount of free RAM available on your system. Knowing this, it is very important to buy a laptop with as much RAM you can afford. RAM is an area where you can’t have budget cuts. A faster and bigger RAM will ensure that you have a smooth gaming experience. More RAM means the laptop will be able to store more information and also read and write faster which helps in getting faster load times and more frame rates in games.
  • Get more Storage: This one is self-explanatory. The more storage you get, the more games you can store at a time to play. But the real purpose of storage is far more complicated than just more games. A bigger HDD would mean more space available for the system to perform processing operations and store temporary data. Data is obtained while playing a game which is temporarily stored on the HDD as cache which ultimately leads to faster gameplay. If you haven’t noticed before, during a gameplay, your main drive gets filled by at least 1 or 2GB. This storage is later freed when the gameplay stops. If the storage of a gaming laptop is low then there will be less space to perform operations and the laptop will adjust according to that but the post processing and speed of the game will most definitely see a downfall. Not to mention low space for storing games.
  • Buy an SSD if possible: Solid State Drives are a new alternative to HDDs. SSDs are very fast compared to HDDs. The average data transfer speed on HDD in approximately 150-180 MB/s while on SSD the average data transfer speed is a whopping 400 MB/s and above. This signifies that an SSD is a much better storage than an HDD for games. Installing games on SSD can lead to a drastic reduction in load times of games. SSDs also prevent random frame rate drops in open world games which is especially necessary now that many of the new generation games are open world. Most gaming laptops now come with a PCIE NV Me SSD which is the fastest of its kind. If you are purchasing a laptop and are in need of a decent SSD make sure that the minimum size of SSD you choose is 256GB as a 128GB SSD won’t cut it because most laptop companies install the operating system on the SSD.
  • Ensure extended warranty: By default, gaming laptops come with a warranty of 1 year. But in my experience 1year warranty is not sufficient since gaming laptops tend to stop working correctly due to prolonged use or gaming. In such a case warranty is necessary and that too more than 1 year. Fortunately, companies provide the option of extending the warranty by paying a certain amount of money. This extra expense is absolutely worth it and should be opted even if the laptop is not used much. Also, many companies now provide more years of warranty by default as well so be sure to check that out.
