Whenever we search on google we always find the things that we are looking for and the ability of google to provide thousands of website links in just a half of a second is pretty amazing. And these search queries are also able to fulfill the requirement of the user and Google is always trying to update its algorithm based on the search intent of the user, and now so far google has the best technology to do the same.
Whenever you have searched for something there is a possibility that the first page results have given what you are looking for, from a statics 92 percent of users find their results on the first search engine result page. Now you may be thinking how is this all possible?
If you are thinking that Google has to search the entire internet to provide the relevant search result that you may be looking for, then you are wrong. Google has a huge database and they store the web pages of the website and then the machine learning algorithm takes a look in these databases to figure out the most relevant website to your search. Let’s see each of the processes in more detail.
The first thing that is done by google is to collect all the web pages that exist on the internet and this task requires a great amount of storage capacity because there are more than 30 trillion web pages out there on the internet, to clear things a website can contain any number of web pages so there are 30 trillion web pages but there are only 1.5 billion websites and each website has to search by the google to find these webpages.
Google uses their programs called web spiders to crawl the web pages, when the spider has reached on web pages it will scan their whole web page to find various text, images, videos, and other content formats to index them or to add them into google’s list of pages. Also when these spiders find a website link in a particular web page it will follow that link and reach the other webpage and repeat the same procedure and index that webpage and this spider keeps on crawling over the internet to regularly look for a new website or the old website with new webpages and never stops looking, it can stop only if it has indexed all of the webpages on the internet but in reality, this never occurs. This indexed data is huge and is more than 100 million gigabytes.
When you enter some text (this text is also known as a user search query) in the google search bar, the google algorithm start to look into the list of indexed web pages and search for specific web pages that are most near to the user search intent and are relevant to your search query. Now you may be thinking how Google can deliver the most relevant search results to the users, for a matter of fact there are more 200 plus ranking factors that come in factor for determining which website has to rank on the top of the search result.
But during early 2000, the ranking factor was just a matter of keywords and backlinks. Keywords are the terms that users put into the google search box, for example, you may be searching for ‘chairs’, the term ‘chair’ is the keyword and when the term ‘chair’ is included into the text on the webpage it becomes the keyword for that particular webpage. Back in early 2000 when the keyword was incorporated over and over on the webpages the more relevant it became to the google algorithm but today the algorithm has got much efficient than ever but back on those days the more number of times a webpage had the particular keyword the higher it ranked on the search, this was not good because the website that may rank may not have the best content in this way. Now backlinks are the backbone of the Google ranking mechanism. This was the technology that separated Google for its predecessors such as Yahoo and AOL. Backlinks are the number of the external links that a website receives. Backlinks are like votes to a particular website and the more number of the backlinks a website has the more the chances of winning the search result page are to that website.
The backlink mechanism is also known as the Pagerank algorithm, it was invented by two PH.D. students Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were at Stanford University. For a fact, they both tried to sell their algorithm to yahoo for just a million-dollar but yahoo thought that their algorithm will distract the user from the main page of the yahoo search engine, and because of this the advertisement revenue came from the banner ads that were placed at their homepage will go down, because of no buyouts of their algorithm they have to open their own company google to test their algorithm and the rest is history.
Though earlier it was quite easy to rank on google but now with machine learning algorithms so many updates that come on google it has become impossible to rank on google with relevant content. Google always tries to satisfy the user with the search results, they are always trying to fulfill the search intent of the user. Every year the number of updates in google is increasing, in 2018 there were 3234 updates which were 8 times more than the number of updates in 2008, no doubt that Google has no competitor in the search industry.
