What is a Profile in Salesforce?

If you go to the profile section in the salesforce which you will find under the manage users then you will be able to find profile name, licenses, and custom profile columns. 

There are two types of profiles in salesforce on is the standard profile which contains all the predefined user roles and permission and the next one is the custom profile. There are many standard profiles in the salesforce, you can find up to 25 standard profiles listed on the profile page. 

So if you are willing to give the salesforce administrator exam then you should select the administrator profile from the profile section. 

If you want to edit the object settings of the administrator profile that you currently in, then you have to search for the account option in the search bar. There are various permission objects that the profile has and you can modify them by checking the boxes. 


How to edit various settings for profile in salesforce?

For the sake of simplicity, we will take an example of the administrator profile and see how we can edit the settings.

App Administration 

Assigned App settings

The assigned app setting that you can find in the administrator profile allows you to access the various applications offered by the salesforce. There are many default assigned apps to the administrator such as app launcher, community, sales, marketing, and many more. The sample Console is not available to the Salesforce administrator profile therefore you can check on the box in front of the sample console. The sample console is the app that is used by organizations for controlling the service cloud feature. Therefore you can edit the assigned app to make the sample console selected to become visible for your profile. 

There are also default applications such as marketing, sales, etc to be default assigned roles for each profile. 

Object settings

The object settings allow access to the permission to objects and fields as well as settings to specify the page layout and tabs that are visible to the profile. Various objects are available to the profile, these objects are present on the header section of the profile. For example, you can see the opportunity tab on the upper blue bar of the administrator profile. The opportunity tab settings can be edited via the object settings. You can select the object and then you have to select the opportunity settings, from here you can change the permissions that are given to the administrator for the opportunity object. Also, various object permissions are provided to the profile and that cannot be edited because they are the default object permissions that the administrator must have although the field permission can be edited. 

Also, you can hide or unhide the tabs from the header by selecting the hidden or visible option from that particular object’s settings. 

App permissions

This option enables app-specific actions. These apps are generally the apps that are found in the upper right corner named the app menu. You can easily manage the various apps provided to you under the specific profile. For example, in the administrator profile, there is an app called “call center” therefore you can easily change the settings under the “manage call center” option in the app permission. 

These are the options that are available to the administrator profile under the app administration. There are other options such as apex class object and others, but these objects are more required to the developer. So if you are trying to attempt the salesforce administrator exam then you can skip those options.


System administration

As we have already seen in the app administration and various features that the app administration provides. There are many features that we can manage from the system administrator.

System permission

This enables the permission to actions that can be applied across all the apps. For example, there is the system permission to “manage all data”. In the system permission, we can manage the data of the activities in the app and various other features. There are other features also such as managing reports and dashboards of the apps which are highly used by the administrator. 

Login hours

You can set the time that the users can log in to the system. The default login hours for the users are 24/7 and they will have access to the services throughout the day. The business owners can set their working hours during which the users can access their services.
